Chelsea’s attack continues to provide reasons for optimism under Xabi Alonso.

Their defence continues to provide reasons for concern.

A lively Chelsea vs Hull City encounter finished 2-2 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as Mohamed Belloumi’s first-half double punished the Blues before João Pedro rescued a point after the break.

Morgan Rogers had given Chelsea the perfect start after only seven minutes, but what initially looked like another confident afternoon quickly became another demonstration of the fragility Alonso is attempting to remove from his new-look side.

Chelsea created dangerous attacking moments through Rogers, Cole Palmer and João Pedro, yet promoted Hull repeatedly found ways to expose spaces and individual mistakes at the opposite end.

The result leaves Chelsea with seven points from their opening four Premier League matches, while Hull remain unbeaten with eight points and sit one place above the Blues.

Chelsea Make Another Electric Start

Few teams have started Premier League matches as aggressively as Chelsea this season.

The Blues had scored the opening goal inside seven minutes in each of their first three league fixtures before Saturday — and against Hull, they did it again.

A Hull corner was transformed into a Chelsea counterattack within seconds.

João Pedro released Rogers into space, and the summer signing drove toward the penalty area before firing a low effort beyond Konstantinos Tzolakis at the near post in the seventh minute.

It was another significant contribution from Rogers.

The England international has now either scored or assisted in each of Chelsea’s opening four Premier League matches. Opta reports that only Didier Drogba, Cesc Fàbregas, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard had previously achieved that feat for Chelsea at the beginning of a Premier League campaign.

Chelsea had breached a Hull defence that had not conceded a league goal all season.

Everything appeared to be moving according to plan.

Then the game changed.

Belloumi Punishes Chelsea’s Defensive Mistakes

Hull did not respond by retreating.

Instead, Sergej Jakirovic’s side attacked the weaknesses Chelsea offered them.

The equaliser arrived in the 28th minute.

Ryan Giles sent a looping delivery toward the far side of the Chelsea penalty area, where Jorrel Hato misjudged the flight of the ball. Mohamed Belloumi reacted immediately and finished beyond Emiliano Martínez.

It was avoidable.

Six minutes later, Chelsea were behind.

A Hull corner caused more problems inside the area. Semi Ajayi’s header struck the crossbar before the loose ball eventually reached Belloumi, whose effort took a deflection off Levi Colwill on its way past Martínez.

Chelsea had gone from 1-0 ahead to 2-1 behind in approximately six minutes.

That period ultimately defined the afternoon.

The Bigger Concern for Xabi Alonso

Individual errors can happen.

Patterns are more concerning.

Chelsea have now conceded at least twice in each of their opening four Premier League games — the first time they have experienced such a start since the 2015/16 season. They have also failed to keep a league clean sheet this campaign.

Alonso acknowledged the problem after the game, describing Chelsea as too easy to play against when they lost control after taking the lead.

His broader assessment was revealing: Chelsea are currently functioning better when attacking than when defending.

That is increasingly visible.

When Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro combine at speed, Chelsea can look like one of the league’s most threatening attacking teams.

Without the ball, the structure is far less convincing.

Distances become larger. Second balls become harder to control. Opponents gain encouragement from moments that should otherwise be routine.

Against Hull, those weaknesses were punished.

Chelsea Push Back After Half-Time

Alonso reacted immediately.

Hato was withdrawn at the interval, with Pep Chavarría introduced as Chelsea searched for greater stability on the left.

Reece James almost equalised eight minutes into the second half with a superb free-kick, only for Tzolakis to produce a fingertip save that sent the ball against the post.

Hull were not simply surviving, however.

Regan Slater forced Martínez into action before Oli McBurnie was presented with an enormous opportunity from the rebound. The Argentine goalkeeper recovered brilliantly to deny him from close range.

That moment became crucial.

Five minutes later, Chelsea were level.

João Pedro Delivers Again

Cole Palmer finally found enough space to drive directly at the Hull defence before cutting the ball back toward João Pedro.

The Brazilian did the rest.

His emphatic finish into the roof of the net in the 66th minute made it 2-2 and continued an excellent individual start to the Premier League season.

João Pedro now has three league goals and three assists, putting him among the competition’s early leaders in both categories.

More importantly for Chelsea, his combination with Rogers and Palmer continues to develop.

All three were involved in Chelsea’s goals against Hull:

Rogers’ goal — João Pedro assist.
João Pedro goal — Palmer assist.

There is already a clear attacking relationship developing between them.

The challenge for Alonso is ensuring that Chelsea do not constantly require that front line to repair damage created elsewhere.

Chelsea vs Hull City Shows a Tactical Warning

One statistic makes this draw particularly interesting.

According to Opta, Chelsea finished with just 0.89 expected goals, compared with Hull’s 1.49 xG.

That matters because Chelsea spent long periods attacking and controlled territory, yet Hull created the better-quality opportunities.

It points toward two developing problems.

First, Chelsea still need greater patience and variety when breaking down compact defensive structures.

Second, their defensive transition remains vulnerable when possession is lost or when opponents bypass the first line of pressure.

Hull understood both weaknesses.

They defended in numbers when required, competed aggressively for second balls and attacked quickly whenever Chelsea’s structure opened.

This was not simply a fortunate point for the promoted side.

Hull executed their approach extremely well.

Hull Could Even Have Won It

Chelsea pushed for a winner in the final stages, but the clearest opportunity late in the game arguably belonged to Hull.

Mohamed-Ali Cho found himself with a close-range opportunity in the 88th minute, only for Martínez to make another important save.

At the opposite end, Rogers also had a strong opportunity denied by Tzolakis.

Chelsea appealed for a late penalty when an Estêvão delivery appeared to strike Semi Ajayi’s arm, but play continued following the officials’ review.

There would be no fifth goal.

Chelsea 2-2 Hull City.

Hull’s Remarkable Premier League Return Continues

The result deserves to be viewed from Hull’s perspective as well.

Many expected the promoted club to struggle immediately following their return to the Premier League.

Instead, Jakirovic’s team have collected eight points from four matches, remaining unbeaten after victories over Manchester United and Coventry City and draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Opta notes that only Nottingham Forest in 1994/95 and Bolton Wanderers in 2001/02 collected more points through the opening four matches among newly promoted Premier League teams.

That makes Saturday’s result more than simply a Chelsea failure.

Hull are proving increasingly difficult to dismiss.

Their defensive organisation, willingness to compete and ability to transition quickly have already given several established Premier League teams serious problems.

Rogers and João Pedro Give Chelsea Something to Build Around

If Chelsea are looking for positives, the attacking development is clear.

Rogers has made an immediate impact following his arrival from Aston Villa.

João Pedro is contributing goals and assists.

Palmer continues to operate as Chelsea’s primary creative reference point.

Their chemistry gives Alonso a potentially devastating attacking foundation.

Before the match, the Chelsea head coach had highlighted how quickly Palmer and Rogers were developing an understanding, with the pair already contributing heavily during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Against Hull, that attacking promise remained visible.

The problem is balance.

Winning Premier League matches consistently requires more than scoring early and creating flashes of brilliant football.

Chelsea need control after gaining an advantage.

Right now, they do not have enough of it.

What Comes Next for Chelsea?

Four Premier League matches is far too early to make definitive conclusions about Alonso’s Chelsea.

The squad underwent another significant summer reconstruction, and Reuters reports that 11 players arrived while 17 departed during the window.

Building a coherent defensive unit after that level of turnover takes time.

But Chelsea’s next stage of development is already obvious.

The attacking mechanisms are appearing faster than the defensive ones.

Until the gap between those two areas closes, games that Chelsea appear capable of controlling could continue to become unpredictable.

That is exciting for neutrals.

It is less useful for a team with ambitions of challenging near the top of the Premier League.

Football Today Media Verdict

Chelsea did enough to avoid defeat against Hull City.

They did not do enough to deserve complete control of the afternoon.

Rogers continued his excellent start. João Pedro again demonstrated his growing importance. Palmer created the equaliser.

Those are meaningful positives.

But Hull’s two goals — and the opportunities they created beyond them — exposed the issue Xabi Alonso must solve.

Chelsea already possess an attack capable of winning matches. The next challenge is building a team capable of controlling them.

The Chelsea vs Hull City draw was therefore more than two dropped points.

It was another reminder that for all the excitement surrounding Chelsea’s new era, their progress may ultimately depend on what happens when they do not have the ball.
